UPDATE: unfortunately we have had to postpone this event until later this year. But stay tuned for info about a new date!
Do you love drawing big frocks and top hats?
This event is for you!
I’m a big believer in Serendipity. I can’t tell you the number of times one small action has unexpectedly led to meeting a new friend or the possibility of an exciting artistic opportunity. When I went to an evening event last year at Leeds Central Library to look at books from their amazing special collections, I was thrilled at the range of materials, from natural history to Japanese children’s books. Victorian fashion plates of elaborate ladies hairstyles from Leeds Libraries’ Sanderson Collection intrigued me the most.
I was so wowed, I made an appointment to look at them in the Library’s Drawing Room. At first I had no idea how I wanted to respond to them, but recently I started drawing and painting from the images. It has become a ‘passion project’ and I plan on building a collection of images for my own enjoyment and perhaps the enjoyment of others!
But back to Serendipity. That morning spent with the Sanderson Collection led to a lovely new connection with the Drawing Room. The librarians put heart and soul into programming it as a space for visual art workshops with a wide range of practitioners. I had the pleasure leading an Illustration Masterclass there in October 2018 that led to chats about a special Valentine’s art workshop around the Sanderson Collection.
Valentine’s Day is a perfect time to explore the Sanderson Collection. Who wouldn’t love hearing all about it from a knowledgable librarian in the morning and drawing elegant Georgians and Victorians in stunning outfits? (Not to mention hearts and flowers.)
This is exactly what we are going to do in the Drawing Room on Thursday, 14 February 2019. After soaking up the gorgeousness of the fashion plates, we are going to have an art workshop making our own Valentine cards inspired by fabulous frocks. All materials will be provided, including some lovely decorated papers for a bit of collaging. Bring a packed lunch or enjoy something in the beautiful Tiled Hall cafe downstairs. Tea and coffee will be provided.
No experience is necessary! I will give step by step instruction. I hope you’ll leave the afternoon workshop with one or two lovely Valentine pieces and a bit more confidence with drawing, inking and basic painting.
Places are limited so please do visit this page to book. This study day and art workshop would be perfect for friends to do together!
I’m looking forward to meeting you in the Drawing Room for a day of elegance and creativity!
